General Education Diploma (GED®)

GED® Classes:

All new students

  • Attend an information and assessment class
  • Begin as soon as you complete this initial class
  • 18 years of age and older, however, in Pennsylvania, you can be 16 or 17 years of age and take the GED® test if you meet the following exception:
    • 16 or 17 years of age must provide a written request for GED® testing from an employer, college admissions office, military recruiting officer, or director of a state instutution
    • 16 or 17 years of age must provide a written statement from your school superintendent or principal saying that you are withdrawn from high school
  • Not currently enrolled in school

What is the GED®?

  • General Education Diploma®
  • National examination developed by the GED® Testing Service of the American Council on Education
  • Diploma is issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Education
  • Test is widely recognized by colleges, training schools, and employers as equivalent to a high school diploma
  • Computer-based exam is given ONLY at authorized test centers (Bradford County Action is an authorized testing center)

Am I eligible to take the GED® tests? Yes if:

  • Left high school without graduating
  • 18 years of age and older, however, in Pennsylvania, you can be 16 or 17 years of age and take the GED® test if you meet the following exception:
    • 16 or 17 years of age must provide a written request for GED® testing from an employer, college admissions office, military recruiting officer, or director of a state instutution; and not currently enrolled in school
  • The actual GED® diploma is received only if you are 18 years or older or if your high school class has graduated

GED® Testing and Retesting: An applicant who has not successfully completed or passed all the test sections may take a retest.

GED® has 4 sections:

  1. Reasoning Through Language Arts - 155 minutes
  2. Mathematical Reasoning - 120 minutes
  3. Science - 95 minutes
  4. Social Studies - 75 minutes

To qualify for a diploma, an applicant must:

  • Score at least a 145 or higher in each of the 4 test sections

How should I prepare for the tests? Bradford County Action, Inc. has classes specifically geared to the GED® tests.

These classes are:

  • Offered at various sites in Bradford County during the school year
  • Available during the entire year in Towanda
  • Five hours each week with Distance Learning options
  • Informal and small in size to allow for individual, personalized attention
  • Individual timeline for GED® preparation and areas of need
  • All sections of the GED® test are covered during class discussion, and hands-on practice

Before starting class you will take an intake test to aid the instructor in preparing your course work by attending an Agency Information Meeting (AIM) which are available in both Towanda and Sayre.
